History of Lawrence-Lane Farm

The original two story side-hall plan house was built ca. 1866 for Marmaduke Lawrence and was enlarged with a two-story gable front wing and turn-of-the-century scrolls.  His youngest son, Charlie Marmaduke, married Margaret Howell in 1903.  They moved to Gatesville in 1918 after he was elected sheriff.  Afterwards, the house became rental property.  Carnes and Lucille Berryman moved here from Chowan County with his parents in 1937.  They farmed the land and took excellent care of the house for 66 years.  No construction was done to the house in the 1900's except for adding electricity and plumbing.  The house today is furnished with their furniture.
